PMI STEEL Hastelloy Alloy C276 (also known as Alloy C276), is a nickel-molybdenum-chromium-iron-tungsten alloy which is among the most corrosion-resistant alloys currently available. The high molybdenum content imparts resistance to localized corrosion such as pitting. The low carbon minimizes carbide precipitation during welding to maintain resistance to intergranular attack in heat affected zones of welding joints.Typical applications of HASTELLOY C276 include equipment components in chemical and petrochemical organic chloride processes and processes utilizing halide or acid catalysts.

PMI STEEL Hastelloy C276 Bar

Nickel Alloy C 276 / N10276 / Wr. 2.4819

Product Description

The PMI Hastelloy C276 Bar is a high-performance nickel alloy specifically engineered to resist corrosion and high-temperature conditions in extreme environments. Its higher molybdenum and chromium content enhances the alloy’s resistance to chloride ion attack, while tungsten further improves its corrosion resistance. Hastelloy C276 is one of the few materials that can withstand the corrosion of moist chlorine gas, hypochlorite, and chlorine dioxide solutions. This alloy exhibits remarkable corrosion resistance to high concentrations of chloride salt solutions, such as ferric chloride and cupric chloride. As a result, its applications in the global chemical, oil and gas, pharmaceutical, and power industries are extensive, making it a preferred material for harsh applications by engineers and the pharmaceutical industry.

Applications of Hastelloy C276 :

Hastelloy C276 alloy is widely used in the chemical and petrochemical sectors, particularly in components and catalytic systems that come into contact with chlorinated organic substances. This material is especially suitable for use in high-temperature environments as well as in corrosive conditions involving inorganic and organic acids (such as formic and acetic acids) and seawater.

Material Properties

Corrosion Resistance:

- Exceptional resistance to strong acids (such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and hydrofluoric acid) and chlorides.

- Exhibits outstanding stress corrosion cracking resistance in environments containing chloride ions, effectively preventing aging and damage of the material.

Thermal Stability:

- Capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1100°C, with stable mechanical properties and oxidation resistance.

- Maintains good strength and toughness in high-temperature working environments.

Machinability:

- Excellent machinability, suitable for various nickel alloy fabrication processes.

- Good weldability, allowing compatibility with multiple welding methods (such as TIG and MIG welding).

Main Chemical Composition

The elemental composition of PMI Hastelloy C276 is as follows:

- Nickel (Ni): Balance

- Molybdenum (Mo): 15.0% - 17.0%

- Chromium (Cr): 14.5% - 16.5%

- Iron (Fe): 4.0% - 7.0%

- Tungsten (W): 3.0% - 4.5%

- Other Elements: Strict control of elements like manganese, silicon, and cobalt to ensure the alloy’s superior stability.

This composition enables C276 to perform excellently in many corrosive environments and adapt to complex working conditions.

Mechanical Properties

- Tensile Strength: ≥ 620 MPa

- Yield Strength: ≥ 240 MPa

- Elongation: ≥ 40%

- Hardness: Brinell hardness approximately 150-300 HB

The above mechanical properties indicate that Hastelloy C276 possesses not only good mechanical strength but also high ductility. It exhibits high strength and toughness, making machining somewhat challenging; the deformation rate at 15% is approximately twice that of 18-8 stainless steel. Hastelloy alloys also exhibit a medium-temperature sensitization zone, with the tendency to sensitize increasing with the deformation rate. At elevated temperatures, Hastelloy alloys are prone to absorbing harmful elements that can decrease their mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

Physical Properties

- Density: 8.89 g/cm³

- Melting Point: 1300°C - 1350°C

- Thermal Conductivity: 12.5 W/m·K

- Thermal Expansion Coefficient: 14.0 × 10⁻⁶ /K

- Resistivity: 1.0 × 10⁻⁶ Ω·m

These physical properties ensure material stability under thermal loads and effectively mitigate the impact of heating or cooling.

Key Performance Features

- Exceptional Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance: Particularly outstanding in high-temperature environments with chloride ions, significantly reducing the likelihood of equipment failure.

- Wear Resistance: Maintains good surface integrity even under prolonged wear conditions.

- Heat Resistance: Preserves relatively stable mechanical properties and corrosion resistance in high-oxidative temperature environments.

The PMI Hastelloy C276 is widely used in harsh corrosive environments, such as in the chemical, petrochemical, flue gas desulfurization, pulp and paper, and environmental protection industries.
